How to use GIF Compressor

Shrink an animated GIF to a fraction of its size and check every changed pixel before you download.

A short guide to getting good results, plus answers to the questions people ask most.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Drop the GIF, press Compress

Quick mode compresses at a sensible default: smart delta plus light lossy. The result line shows the new size and what the delta kept.

  2. 2

    Check Wipe and Diff

Drag the line across the picture and step frames. In Diff, black means untouched and brighter means the pixel changed. Dark everywhere but the moving subject means room to go further.

  3. OutputOutput
    DiffDiff
The result beside its Diff map: black is untouched, brighter is a pixel the pass repainted.
  4. 3

    Move Quality first

Quality is lossy compression: invisible on most sources up to the middle of the slider and far cheaper than fewer colors. Move it before touching anything else.

  5. 4

    Then lower Colors

Below 256 the loop shares one palette and gradients go first. Under Advanced, Motion threshold sets how far a pixel must move before it is repainted.

  6. Colors 256Colors 256
    Colors 64Colors 64
    Colors 16Colors 16
Colors at 256, 64 and 16 on one frame. The palette goes first in the flat areas, then in gradients.
  7. 5

Set a limit with Fit under

Choose a platform or type a size. The tool spends Quality first, then Colors, then Scale, then Frame rate, and every attempt is a real encode you can read in the list.

About this tool

Drop in a GIF and press Compress: it comes back smaller, with the size measured, not estimated. A smart delta pass repaints only the pixels that moved, then gifsicle compresses the rest. People use it to fit a GIF under a chat, forum or social media limit.

You download a GIF that plays at the same length with the same frames. Source and result play on one clock with a wipe, side by side, and a difference map, so you see what changed.

Features

Smart delta

A temporal pass repaints only the pixels that moved, so a still background under video noise compresses far further.

Fit under a limit

Pick a platform or a size; the search runs on measured bytes and shows every attempt.

Synced before/after

Source and result on one clock: wipe, side by side, amplified difference map, frame stepping, pixel zoom.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. Every feature and every export is free, with no account and no watermark. An account is optional and only keeps your projects so you can reopen them on another device.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser and your files stay on your device. The only thing that leaves it is a project you choose to save to your account.

How do I make a GIF smaller without ruining it?

Start with the default and look at Diff. Then raise the lossy Quality before cutting colors, and resize or drop frames last. Every step shows the measured size.

What is smart delta?

A pass that compares each frame with the screen so far and repaints only pixels that moved past a threshold, with one palette per frame. On full-motion clips it is skipped and the plain result kept.

Is there a file size limit?

No server limit, because compression runs on your device. Very large frames skip the delta pass and go straight to gifsicle.
